The magic ring, Vol. 1 (of 3)
The Magic Ring is a romance of knights and enchantment by the German writer Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, author of Undine, published in German in 1813 and translated into English by R. P. Gillies in 1825. This is the first of three volumes. The young Otto von Trautwangen, raised in a Swabian castle, sets out on his first adventures and becomes entangled in the fate of a ring that passes from hand to hand, drawing together a Norman knight, a Moorish princess, a lady of the woods and a cast of pilgrims and crusaders across Europe and the East. Gillies prefaces the volume with a letter on his meetings with Fouqué in Berlin; readers of Scott will recognize the influence running both ways. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
