The magic ring, Vol. 2 (of 3)
The middle volume of Fouqué's romance opens as a gigantic champion in golden armor, the sea-king Arinbiorn, strides into the hall where Sir Folko of Montfaucon lies wounded, having been defeated in the lists by the young Otto von Trautwangen and lost the ring that is the key to the whole story. The adventures that follow carry Otto, Folko, the Lady Gabrielle and a company of knights, Norsemen and enchanters across medieval Europe in a tangle of quests, combats and recognitions. Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué published Der Zauberring in 1812, and R. P. Gillies translated it in 1825 for readers who had taken to Scott and wanted more of the same from Germany. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
