The magic ring, Vol. 3 (of 3)

by Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué

Translated by R. P. GilliesAbout 3 h 30 min of reading28 chapters

The third and final volume of Fouqué's chivalric romance opens in a castle in Gascony, where the Lady Bertha von Lichtenried sits alone over her book of saints during a thunderstorm and is called to the bedside of a wounded Moorish soldier. From there the many threads of the tale are drawn together: the young knight Otto von Trautwangen, the ring that gives the book its name, Sir Folko of Montfaucon and the Lady Gabrielle, and a cast of Norsemen, Saracens and sorcerers scattered from the Baltic to the Pyrenees. Der Zauberring was published in German in 1812 and appears here in R. P. Gillies's translation of 1825, the version that introduced it to British readers. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
