The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
A cyclone lifts a Kansas farmhouse with Dorothy and her dog Toto inside and sets it down in a country of small, strange people, on top of a wicked witch. To get home, Dorothy must walk the road of yellow brick to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard for help. On the way she acquires a Scarecrow who wants brains, a Tin Woodman who wants a heart and a Lion who wants courage, and all four discover that they already have what they are asking for. Baum published the book in 1900 with W. W. Denslow's color illustrations, intending an American fairy tale without the cruelty of the European ones. The slippers here are silver, not ruby, and the Wizard is a humbug from Omaha. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
