Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, the fourth of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, was published in 1908. A California earthquake drops Dorothy, her kitten Eureka, a farm boy named Zeb and the old cab-horse Jim through a crack in the earth into a glass city whose vegetable inhabitants, the Mangaboos, grow on bushes and have no hearts. There they are joined by the Wizard himself, descending in his balloon, and the party must climb back toward daylight through the Valley of Voices, a mountain of invisible bears, the land of the wooden Gargoyles and a den of dragonettes. The book ends in the Emerald City with a trial that nearly goes badly for Eureka. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
