The Marvelous Land of Oz
The Marvelous Land of Oz, published in 1904, was L. Frank Baum's first return to the country he had invented four years earlier. Its hero is Tip, a boy raised by the witch Mombi, who runs away with Jack Pumpkinhead, a figure he has built and Mombi has accidentally brought to life. Riding a wooden Saw-Horse, they reach the Emerald City just as General Jinjur and her army of girls armed with knitting needles overthrow the Scarecrow. With the Tin Woodman, the Woggle-Bug and a flying Gump assembled from sofas and palm leaves, the friends seek Glinda's help, and the book ends with a surprise about Tip's identity. Dorothy does not appear. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
