Kenneth Grahame (1859–1932) was a Scottish-born English writer, the author of The Wind in the Willows. Born in Edinburgh, he lost his mother at five and was raised by relatives in Berkshire, by the Thames he would write about. Denied the university education he wanted, he joined the Bank of England at twenty and rose to be its Secretary while writing, in his spare time, the essays of Pagan Papers and the stories of childhood collected in The Golden Age and Dream Days. The Wind in the Willows, grown out of bedtime stories and letters to his troubled only son, appeared in 1908. He wrote almost nothing afterward.
