The Air Pirate

About 4 h 21 min of reading20 chapters

In a near future of regular transatlantic air liners, Sir John Custance, the young Commissioner of Air Police for Great Britain, faces a series of attacks by a pirate aircraft that strikes from the dark over the mid-Atlantic, robbing and destroying the great passenger ships of the air. When the woman he loves is aboard one of the victims, the hunt becomes personal, and it leads from Plymouth to the Cornish coast and out over the ocean. Guy Thorne published the novel in 1919, in the first flush of enthusiasm for aviation after the war, and it is an early example of the air-adventure thriller, with imagined machines, a secret base and a villain of the gentleman-criminal type, told in the Commissioner's own voice.
