Guy Thorne was the best-known pen name of Cyril Arthur Edward Ranger Gull (1875–1923), an English journalist and novelist, the son of a Cornish clergyman, who was educated at Oxford and worked on London papers before turning out fiction at great speed under several names. When It Was Dark (1903), a thriller in which a millionaire fakes evidence that the Resurrection never happened and civilization collapses, was a sensation praised from the pulpit by the Bishop of London. He followed it with religious melodramas, historical romances, tales of the occult and early scientific thrillers such as The Air Pirate (1919). He wrote more than a hundred books in all.
