Peter Pan

by J. M. Barrie

About 3 h 09 min of reading18 chapters

The three Darling children, Wendy, John and Michael, are visited one night by a boy who has lost his shadow and are taught to fly by him and his fairy, Tinker Bell. He takes them to the Neverland, an island of lost boys, pirates, mermaids and a crocodile that has swallowed a clock, where Wendy becomes a mother to the boys and Peter fights his old enemy, Captain Hook. Barrie wrote the play in 1904 and this novel version, first published in 1911 as Peter and Wendy, in which the narrator's voice is wry, sad and sometimes cruel about children and the parents who wait for them. Its ending, with Wendy grown up, is one the play's audiences did not see. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
