Peter and Wendy
Peter and Wendy, published in 1911, is J. M. Barrie's own novel of his play Peter Pan, first staged in 1904. Peter, the boy who would not grow up, flies in at the nursery window of the Darling house in Bloomsbury in search of his shadow and takes Wendy, John and Michael to the Neverland, where the Lost Boys need a mother, Tinker Bell is jealous, and Captain Hook and his pirates wait with the crocodile that swallowed a clock. The novel is funnier and sadder than the stage version, with Barrie's wry narrator commenting on Mrs Darling, the dog Nana, and the heartlessness of children, and it adds the final chapter in which Wendy grows up and Peter does not. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
