The Little White Bird
Or, Adventures in Kensigton Gardens
The Little White Bird, published in 1902, is narrated by a lonely, whimsical bachelor of a London club who takes a secret interest in a young couple he sees from his window and then in their small son, David, whom he takes walking in Kensington Gardens. Their friendship, the narrator's half-invented stories and his teasing rivalry with David's mother make up the book. At its center, in a cluster of chapters, the narrator tells David about Peter Pan, a baby who flew out of his nursery and lives among the birds and fairies of the Gardens. This was Peter Pan's first appearance in print; J. M. Barrie later issued those chapters separately as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
