The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The lawyer Gabriel Utterson is troubled by his friend Dr. Henry Jekyll's will, which leaves everything to a Mr. Edward Hyde, a man nobody seems to know and whom those who have met him describe with an instinctive disgust. When Hyde is seen beating an elderly member of Parliament to death, Utterson's enquiries lead him to Jekyll's laboratory and to two confessions that explain what has happened. Stevenson wrote the story quickly in 1885, reportedly after a dream, and published it in 1886; it was an immediate success, and its two names entered the language within a few years. The book is short and told mostly from the outside, so that the reader shares Utterson's bafflement until the final chapter. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
