by Robert Louis Stevenson

Being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751

About 5 h 23 min of reading31 chapters

In 1751 David Balfour, seventeen and newly orphaned, goes to claim his inheritance from his miserly uncle Ebenezer, who tries to kill him and then has him kidnapped aboard a brig bound for the Carolinas. A collision at sea brings aboard Alan Breck Stewart, a Jacobite agent, and after a shipwreck the two of them, Whig and Jacobite, are hunted together across the Highlands following the Appin murder, quarreling, starving and saving each other's lives. Robert Louis Stevenson published the novel in 1886 and based its central crime on a real unsolved killing. It is his finest adventure story and one of the great books about friendship between unlike men. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
