The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson - Swanston Edition, Vol. 20
This volume of the Swanston edition contains St. Ives, the novel Stevenson left unfinished at his death in 1894. Its hero, the Vicomte Anne de Kéroual de Saint-Yves, is a French officer held in Edinburgh Castle as a prisoner of war in 1813. He cuts silhouettes for sale, falls in love with a Scottish girl named Flora who visits the prisoners, kills a fellow captive in a duel fought with scissors, and escapes down the castle rock by rope. The rest is a chase across Britain, with a drover's road, a balloon, an inheritance and a vengeful cousin. Stevenson dictated it in Samoa in his last year; the final chapters were supplied by Arthur Quiller-Couch. It is full of the Scotland he missed. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
