Treasure Island

by Robert Louis Stevenson

About 4 h 34 min of reading41 chapters

An old sailor with a sabre scar takes a room at the Admiral Benbow inn on the English coast, drinks rum, sings about a dead man's chest and waits in terror for a seafaring man with one leg. When he dies, the innkeeper's son Jim Hawkins finds a map in his sea chest, and the local squire and doctor fit out a ship to find the treasure, hiring as cook a one-legged man named Long John Silver. Stevenson wrote the book for his stepson in 1881 and published it in 1883, and it set the terms for every pirate story since: the parrot, the black spot, the stockade, the marooned man. Silver, charming and murderous, is one of the great villains. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
