Catriona
Being Memoirs of the Further Adventures of David Balfour at Home and Abroad
Catriona continues the story begun in Kidnapped. In 1751, David Balfour, now a young man of means, tries to clear James Stewart of the Glens, who stands accused of the Appin murder, and finds himself obstructed by the Lord Advocate and briefly held prisoner on the Bass Rock. He also falls in love with Catriona Drummond, daughter of a disgraced Highland outlaw, and the second half follows the pair to Holland, where David's scruples and inexperience complicate the courtship. Stevenson published the novel in 1893, the year before his death, and it is more concerned with law, politics and conscience than with the chases of its predecessor. Readers who know Kidnapped will recognize Alan Breck Stewart, who returns in a smaller role. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
