About 7 h 23 min of reading229 chapters

The Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson to His Family and Friends were selected and edited by his friend Sidney Colvin, first published in 1899, and this second volume covers the last eight years of the writer's life. It opens at Skerryvore, his house in Bournemouth, in 1886, follows him to the United States and a winter at Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks, then through his cruises among the islands of the Pacific and his settlement at Vailima in Samoa, where he died in 1894. Writing to his parents, to Henry James, Edmund Gosse, W. E. Henley, Charles Baxter, Colvin and many others, Stevenson is by turns playful, affectionate, thoughtful about his work and frank about illness and island politics. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first letters are free.
