About 2 h 51 min of reading22 chapters

Arthur Marcel, an idle Englishman with a medical education and a legacy, meets a brilliant scientist named Herbert Brande on a steamer and is drawn into his circle, the Cui Bono society. Brande has concluded that the universe is a mistake and that he has the means to correct it: a process for unlocking the energy inside matter and setting off a chain of destruction. Marcel, half in love with Brande's sister Natalie, finds himself on an expedition to a Pacific island with the fate of the planet depending on whether he can stop his host. Published in 1895, the novel is among the first to imagine an atomic catastrophe, and it is an early landmark of the genre. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
