The Private Diary of Dr. John Dee, and the Catalog of His Library of Manuscripts
John Dee, the Elizabethan mathematician, astrologer and student of the occult, kept brief notes of his daily life in the margins of almanacs, and this edition by James Orchard Halliwell, published for the Camden Society in 1842, prints them from the manuscripts at Oxford. The entries record births and nativities, visits from courtiers and the queen, journeys, debts, illnesses, quarrels, dreams and the comings and goings of his associate Edward Kelley, sometimes in Latin or Greek letters. Halliwell adds a catalogue of Dee's manuscript library from a list at Trinity College, Cambridge, a reminder of the scale of the collection he built at Mortlake. It is a fragmentary but intimate record of an extraordinary life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
