The Persian Literature, Comprising The Shah Nameh, The Rubaiyat, The Divan, and The Gulistan, Volume 1
This first volume of a 1909 anthology of Persian literature, introduced by the Orientalist Richard J. H. Gottheil, gathers three classics in Victorian translations. The largest part is James Atkinson's abridged version of Firdausi's Shah Nameh, the national epic of Iran, from the first kings through Zal and Rudabeh, the labors of Rustem, his tragic combat with Sohrab, the stories of Saiawush and of Byzun and Manijeh, the death of Rustem and the coming of Sikander, ending with the poet's satire on Sultan Mahmud. Edward FitzGerald's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám follows, then a selection of odes from the Divan of Hafiz translated by Herman Bicknell.
