The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll (Rev. C. L. Dodgson)
This first biography of Lewis Carroll was written by his nephew Stuart Dodgson Collingwood and published in 1898, within a year of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's death. It follows him by decades from the Daresbury parsonage and Rugby to the Oxford of Christ Church, where he taught mathematics for most of his life, through the writing of the two Alice books, Sylvie and Bruno and his logical puzzles, and into his last years. Collingwood draws on diaries and a large body of letters, many to children, and devotes two closing chapters to Carroll's child friends. A bibliography and many illustrations complete a book that remains the main source for Carroll's life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
