The Chinese Classics — Volume 1: Confucian Analects

by James Legge

About 2 h 02 min of reading1 chapters

James Legge, a Scottish missionary in Hong Kong who later became the first professor of Chinese at Oxford, began publishing his translation of the Chinese Classics in 1861, and the Confucian Analects formed its first volume. The Lun Yu is a collection of sayings and short dialogues of Confucius and his disciples, compiled after his death in the fifth century B.C., on learning, government, ritual, filial piety and the character of the superior man. Legge's edition gives the Chinese text beside his English, with critical and exegetical notes drawn from the Chinese commentators. This electronic text preserves the Chinese characters and the original page divisions. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
