Maugis, ye sorcerer

by Lord Gilhooley

About 3 h 44 min of reading20 chapters

A cablegram from the Ardennes tells Lord Gilhooley that the hermit of the Maison Maugis at Mouzon has killed himself after burning everything he owned, including, it is rumored, manuscripts from the age of Charlemagne. Released by the death from an oath of silence, the narrator sets down what the hermit had discovered about Maugis, the enchanter of the old French romances of the Four Sons of Aymon. The book is dedicated, with mock solemnity, to the fools of a learned society at Nancy. Lord Gilhooley was the pen name of an American, Frederick O'Hoolihan, and the novel, published in 1898, is a curiosity of the period, half medieval fantasy and half hoax. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
