Marigold

About 4 h 06 min of reading39 chapters

Lucifram is a world of shadows and contrariness situated near Hell, ruled by a prince who, when he goes about undisguised, is Plucritus, and when he does not, is the saintly St. Armand. Marigold is a princess of an estate in that world, possessed of a reasonable soul and flesh to match, and her story is the author's second visit to Lucifram after The Jewel Sowers, whose reviewers are quoted at length at the front of this edition. Edith Allonby published the novel in 1905. It is a fantasy with the machinery of a fairy tale and the concerns of a moral allegory, written in a heightened, deliberately strange prose that readers of the earlier book had found either entrancing or exasperating. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
