Edith Allonby was an English schoolteacher from Lancashire who published two fantastic novels with Greening of London, The Jewel Sowers in 1903 and Marigold in 1905, both set on Lucifram, a shadow world near Hell whose inhabitants are contrary versions of ourselves, and both written as moral allegories in a heightened, deliberately strange prose. Reviewers were divided between admiration for her imagination and impatience with her manner. She died in 1905, the year Marigold appeared, by her own hand, leaving a final novel, The Fulfilment, which was published after her death. She is remembered, when she is remembered at all, as one of the odder voices of Edwardian fantasy.
