Letters of Samuel Rutherford

by Samuel Rutherford

(Third Edition)

About 22 h 38 min of reading508 chapters

Samuel Rutherford, minister of the small Galloway parish of Anwoth and later one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly, wrote most of these letters between 1636 and 1638, when he had been banished to Aberdeen for his opposition to the bishops. Addressed to parishioners, to the devout Marion M'Naught, to Lady Kenmure and to fellow ministers, they mix pastoral counsel with an intense, often startling devotion to Christ that made them a classic of Scottish piety after their first publication in 1664. Andrew Bonar's edition, here in its third printing, supplies a life of Rutherford, notices of his correspondents, a sample of the original spelling and his last words. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
