Letters of Pliny
The letters of Pliny the Younger, a Roman lawyer and senator who lived from about 61 to 113 AD, are the fullest picture we have of upper-class life under the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. Addressed to friends including Tacitus and Suetonius, they describe his villas, his reading and his law cases, the eruption of Vesuvius in which his uncle died, a haunted house, the treatment of slaves, and, in the official correspondence from Bithynia, his exchange with Trajan on how to deal with Christians. This edition gives William Melmoth's eighteenth-century translation as revised by F. C. T. Bosanquet, with a short account of Pliny's life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
