Letters of Asa Gray; Vol. 2
This second volume of the Letters of Asa Gray, edited by his widow Jane Loring Gray and published in 1893, runs from the botanist's second journey to Europe in 1850 to his death in 1888. Gray, professor at Harvard and the leading American botanist of his century, writes to John Torrey, George Engelmann, the Hookers, Alphonse de Candolle and George Bentham about specimens, herbaria, the flora of Japan and the American West and the business of science. From 1857 he is also Charles Darwin's confidant and his chief defender in America, and the letters on the Origin of Species and on reconciling natural selection with religious belief are the most interesting here. Later chapters cover travels in the Rockies and Europe. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
