King Time, or The Mystical Land of the Hours, published in 1908, is a children's fantasy by Percy Keese Fitzhugh, later known for his scouting stories, with color plates by L. J. Bridgman. A little boy recovering from an illness, bored by the slow ticking of the hall clock, accepts an invitation from Mr. Three O'Clock and travels into the realm where the hours of the day live as people, ruled by Father Time. On the journey the traveler meets minstrels, a magical flower, the legendary Wollerperleck, a group of colonial hours and the mighty Duke Procrastinate, and learns why time must be kept. Verse and prose alternate, and the humor relies on puns and whimsy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
