Journals of Dorothy Wordsworth, Vol. 1 (of 2)
Dorothy Wordsworth never wrote for publication, yet her journals are a central record of English Romanticism. This first volume of William Knight's 1897 edition gathers extracts from the Alfoxden journal of 1798, kept while she and her brother lived near Coleridge in Somerset, from the trip to Hamburg that autumn, and from the Grasmere journals of 1800 to 1803, followed by the opening weeks of her Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland in 1803. She notes weather, walks, birds, neighbors, vagrants and household work with exact, unpretentious sensitivity, and many entries record the moments from which William's poems grew.
