Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore, Volume 1 (of 2)
Comprising Their Life and Work as Recorded in Their Diaries, from 1812 to 1883
Sir Moses Montefiore, born in Livorno in 1784, made a fortune as a London stockbroker and devoted the rest of his long life to the defense of Jewish communities across the world. These volumes, edited by his friend and secretary Louis Loewe and published in 1890, tell his story through the diaries that he and his wife Judith kept for decades. The first volume covers his family and early years, his business career and marriage, their first journey to Jerusalem in 1827, and the campaign for Jewish emancipation in England, with encounters with Lady Hester Stanhope, the Duke of Wellington and Lord Brougham. The diaries mix piety, politics and travel. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
