About 12 h 23 min of reading23 chapters

Andersonville Diary is the journal kept by John L. Ransom, a sergeant of the Ninth Michigan Cavalry, during his imprisonment in Confederate prisons in the Civil War, published by the author in 1881. Captured in Tennessee in late 1863, Ransom writes of Belle Isle in Richmond and then of the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, where thousands died of hunger, exposure and disease. He records daily survival, the raiders who preyed on fellow prisoners and their trial, hospital life, transfer to Millen, failed and successful escapes. The book closes with lists of the Union dead buried at Andersonville, a sober memorial. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
