Amiel's Journal: The Journal Intime of Henri-Frédéric Amiel
Henri-Frédéric Amiel, a professor of philosophy at Geneva who published little and was thought a failure in his lifetime, kept a private journal for more than thirty years. Selections from it, published after his death in 1881, revealed a mind of rare delicacy turning over questions of religion, duty, solitude, the Swiss landscape and his own incapacity for action, and made him famous. Mrs. Humphry Ward's translation, first published in 1885 and here in her revised second edition with additional passages, carries a long introduction on Amiel's life and thought. The entries run from 1848 to the year of his death. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
