A Voyage to Arcturus, published in 1920, was David Lindsay's first novel and found few readers in his lifetime, though it later gained a devoted following. It begins at a séance in Hampstead, where a strange visitor named Krag appears; soon Maskull, his companion Nightspore and Krag set off from a tower in Scotland for Tormance, a planet circling the star Arcturus. There Maskull grows new organs of perception and passes through a series of landscapes, each with its own beings and its own idea of life, love and pleasure, in search of the mysterious Surtur. Stranger than most science fiction, the book is a philosophical and spiritual allegory that influenced C. S. Lewis and remains unlike anything else. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
