A Literary History of Ireland, from Earliest Times to the Present Day
A Literary History of Ireland, published in 1899 and dedicated to the Gaelic League, was Douglas Hyde's attempt to show English-speaking readers that Ireland possessed a literature in its own language reaching back more than a thousand years. He begins with the Celts, the early pagan pantheon, druidism, ogham and the coming of Christianity with Patrick, Brigit and Columcille, then describes the monastic and bardic schools. The core of the book surveys the saga cycles, the Red Branch tales of Cuchulain and Deirdre and the Táin, the Fenian and Ossianic poems, and goes on through the Danish wars, the annals, the Brehon laws and the poets of the eighteenth century, with many passages in translation.
