Utopia
Thomas More's Utopia takes the form of a conversation in Antwerp with a traveler named Raphael Hythloday, who first criticizes the England of enclosures and hangings and then describes an island republic where property is held in common, work is limited to six hours a day, gold is used for chamber pots and religious tolerance is the rule. More wrote it in Latin and published it in 1516, two decades before his own execution under Henry VIII, and he never says how much of Hythloday's report he endorses. The word he coined has passed into every language. This edition presents the classic English translation with an introduction by Henry Morley. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
