The Watchers of the Plains: A Tale of the Western Prairies
The Watchers of the Plains, published in 1909, is a Western set in the Bad Lands of Dakota, near the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations. In a lonely hut on the White River lives Nevil Steyne, an Englishman gone to seed, whose letter from home stirs up old resentments. Across the river the Sioux are restless, and in the settlement of Beacon Crossing the scout Seth and his friends watch over Rosebud, a girl they have raised, while the Indian woman Wanaha and the war chief Little Black Fox play their parts in an uprising. Ridgwell Cullum, who had lived on the prairie, combines frontier adventure, a mystery of identity and a love story told with rough humor.
