The Blue Lagoon

by H. de Vere Stacpoole

About 4 h 10 min of reading57 chapters

The Blue Lagoon, first published in 1908, follows two small cousins, Dick and Emmeline, who escape a burning ship with an old Irish sailor and drift to an uninhabited island in the Pacific. When the sailor dies they are left to raise themselves, learning to fish, build and read the weather from the sea and the sky. The novel watches them grow from children into adolescents who have no word for what is happening to them, and much of its power comes from what they do not understand about love, birth and the outside world. Stacpoole, a ship's doctor, fills the book with natural detail, and the novel is quieter and darker than its film adaptations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
