Twenty Years After
Twenty years after the events of The Three Musketeers, France is ruled in the name of a boy king by Cardinal Mazarin, and Paris is restless. D'Artagnan, still a lieutenant, is sent to find his old friends, but the four men are no longer on one side: he and Porthos serve Mazarin, while Athos and Aramis are drawn to the rebellious Fronde. Milady's son, Mordaunt, has grown up hunting the men who executed his mother. The novel moves between France and England, where the friends try to save Charles I from the scaffold, and Dumas gives Athos a son, Raoul, whose story continues in later volumes. Published in 1845, it is longer and darker than its predecessor. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
