The Three Musketeers

by Alexandre Dumas

Translated by William RobsonAbout 15 h 19 min of reading69 chapters

In 1625 the young Gascon d'Artagnan arrives in Paris to join the king's musketeers and within a day has challenged three of them, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, to duels. They become inseparable friends and are drawn into the struggle between Louis XIII's queen and Cardinal Richelieu: a trip to London to recover the queen's diamonds, the siege of La Rochelle, and the long duel with the cardinal's agent Milady de Winter, which turns from comedy to something much darker. Alexandre Dumas published the novel serially in 1844, working from a seventeenth-century memoir, and it remains the model of the historical adventure. This edition presents it in William Robson's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
