The Vicomte de Bragelonne is the last of the D'Artagnan romances that Alexandre Dumas wrote with Auguste Maquet, serialized between 1847 and 1850, and this edition gives its opening portion. It is 1660. D'Artagnan, still a lieutenant of musketeers, is tired of waiting on a young Louis XIV who lives under Cardinal Mazarin's thumb. When the exiled Charles II comes begging for help to recover the English throne, D'Artagnan and Athos each set out, separately and by different methods, to put him back on it. Meanwhile Athos's son Raoul, the vicomte of the title, loves Louise de La Vallière. Dumas writes with the brisk dialogue and dry humor of the earlier books, now tinged with a sense of age.
