About 4 h 54 min of reading33 chapters

The Black Tulip opens in The Hague in 1672 with the mob killing of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt, then narrows to a quieter drama. Cornelius van Baerle, Cornelis's godson and a gentle tulip grower of Dordrecht, is close to producing a truly black tulip, for which the horticultural society of Haarlem has offered a fortune, when an envious neighbor has him arrested for treason. In prison at Loevestein he finds an ally in Rosa, the jailer's daughter, and the fate of three precious bulbs becomes a contest of patience, ingenuity and greed. Written by Alexandre Dumas with Auguste Maquet and published in 1850, the novel keeps its history brief and its suspense close.
