The Conspirators, also known as The Chevalier d'Harmental, is a historical novel by Alexandre Dumas and Auguste Maquet, first published in 1843 and set in Paris in 1718, under the regency of Philippe d'Orléans. The Chevalier d'Harmental, a young officer dismissed from the army, is drawn by the Duchesse du Maine into the conspiracy organized with the Spanish ambassador Cellamare to overthrow the regent. Lodging under a false name in a garret, he falls in love with Bathilde, the ward of Jean Buvat, a timid copyist who without knowing it holds the plot in his hands. The regent's wily minister, the Abbé Dubois, watches from the shadows. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
