The Count of Monte Cristo
In 1815, on the eve of his wedding, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is denounced by three men who envy him and imprisoned without trial in the Château d'If. Fourteen years later he escapes, recovers a treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo, and returns to Paris as a mysterious count to take his revenge, slowly and with great ingenuity, on the men who have since risen to wealth and power. Dumas published the novel serially between 1844 and 1846; it is very long, and the pleasure lies in its accumulation of disguises, poisonings, duels, bankruptcies and recognitions. This edition is the anonymous English translation first issued by Chapman and Hall in 1846, the version most readers of the novel in English have known.
