Roderick Random is a Scottish orphan of good family, disowned by his grandfather and sent into the world with nothing but an education and a temper. With his faithful friend Strap he goes to London, is cheated, robbed and pressed into the navy, where he serves as a surgeon's mate on the disastrous expedition against Cartagena in 1741. He is a soldier in France, a fortune hunter in Bath, a prisoner for debt, and at last a passenger to South America, where a surprise awaits. Smollett's first novel, published in 1748, is modeled on the French picaresque and draws on his own time as a naval surgeon.
