The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom — Complete
The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom, published in 1753, is Smollett's experiment in making a villain his hero. Fathom is born in a baggage wagon to a camp follower, raised by a Hungarian nobleman, and lives by fraud, seduction and gambling across Germany, France and England. Smollett follows his schemes with mingled relish and disgust, and the honest characters he cheats, especially the young Count de Melvil and the woman Monimia, gradually take over the moral center of the book. The famous night scene in which Fathom shelters in a robbers' hut in a forest has been called the first Gothic episode in English fiction. The novel ends with a repentance that readers have argued about ever since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
