The Expedition of Humphry Clinker
Matthew Bramble, a Welsh squire of uncertain temper and sound heart, sets out on a tour of Britain for his health with his husband-hunting sister Tabitha, his Oxford-educated nephew Jery, his romantic niece Lydia and Tabitha's maid Winifred Jenkins, whose spelling is a disaster. The story is told in their letters, so that every spa, inn and quarrel is seen from several angles at once. Along the way they pick up a ragged postilion named Humphry Clinker, who turns out to matter more than anyone expected, and a scarred old soldier named Lismahago who argues with everyone. Smollett's last novel, published in 1771 a few months before his death, is his gentlest and funniest, with a wide, sharp picture of Bath, London and Scotland.
