The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Complete
Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly in St. Petersburg, a river town in Missouri modeled on Twain's own Hannibal, and spends his time avoiding school, trading trash with other boys and courting Becky Thatcher. With his friend Huckleberry Finn, the son of the town drunk, he goes to the graveyard at midnight to try a cure for warts and witnesses a murder. The boys swear an oath of silence, run away to an island to be pirates, attend their own funeral, and end up in a cave with the killer. Published in 1876, the novel was Twain's first for young readers and is still the best account of what boys of that time and place actually did. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
