About 7 h 50 min of reading49 chapters

Hank Morgan, a foreman at the Colt arms factory in Hartford, is knocked on the head and wakes up in England in the year 528, where he is promptly taken prisoner by a knight and sentenced to be burned. He saves himself by predicting an eclipse, becomes the king's minister under the title of "the Boss," and sets about introducing the sixth century to soap, newspapers, telephones, bicycles and gunpowder, while Merlin schemes against him. Twain published the novel in 1889, and what begins as a burlesque of Malory and Tennyson turns into an attack on monarchy, slavery, the Church and finally on Hank's own faith in progress, which ends in a battle with electrified fences and Gatling guns.
